Helping gardeners find the right seeds with a custom Shopify experience.
Choosing seeds starts with a few practical questions: What do I want to grow? What works in my garden? Where should I begin? We rebuilt the Seeds 'n Such Shopify storefront around those questions — connecting crop browsing, gardening goals and growing zones with clearer product information, Mix 'n Match packet pricing and a consistent experience across desktop and mobile.

A storefront with distinct paths for shoppers who know their crop, have a gardening goal or need help choosing for their location.
Seeds 'n Such sells vegetable, herb and flower seeds to gardeners across the United States. Its customers arrive with different levels of experience and different ways of choosing what to grow.
Some already know the variety they want. Others are planning a container garden, looking for a quicker harvest or trying to understand which seeds suit their growing conditions.
The project brought those starting points into one Shopify experience. We connected navigation, collection landing pages, product content and catalog data so customers could move from a gardening idea to a relevant selection of seeds.

A seed store needs to explain more than what a product costs. Customers also need to understand the variety, packet options and growing information that make it right for their garden.
The challenge was to make those decisions easier across the storefront while supporting a large, detailed catalog and the brand's Mix 'n Match packet offer:
- Giving both experienced and first-time gardeners a useful place to start.
- Connecting gardening goals and growing zones to relevant collections.
- Keeping product information consistent across templates and catalog updates.
- Applying Mix 'n Match pricing reliably across hundreds of packet variants.
- Making navigation work alongside search, account and cart on smaller screens.
- Handling seed packets, multiple sizes and gardening supplies in the same store.
Start with how gardeners choose
We organized browsing around three clear paths: Shop by Crop, Shop by Goal and Shop by Zone. Crop browsing serves customers who know what they want to grow. Goal browsing supports needs like container gardening, fresh eating or disease resistance. Zone discovery gives a location-based starting point for customers who need guidance. Together they give the catalog far more useful entry points than a single list of categories.
Connect the experience to product data
The pages needed a maintainable structure behind them. Shopify metafields, collection references and structured catalog imports connect product information with the storefront. Goal-page calls to action link to their collections through metafield references, seed-specific content and FAQs live in the product template, and non-seed supplies get their own purchase wording. The browsing structure is part of the store's content system — not a set of isolated promo pages.
Refine the journey through launch
We worked through the details customers meet while shopping: header spacing, mobile navigation, collection context in breadcrumbs, product-page content and cart presentation — then kept iterating with the Seeds 'n Such team after launch.
Mix 'n Match as a custom Shopify app
Seeds 'n Such lets customers combine packets across varieties at a single packet price. We built the discount as a custom Shopify app on Shopify Functions — developed in our Shopify Partner account and installed directly on the store. The logic runs natively in Shopify's checkout and targets eligible packet SKUs by a consistent pattern, so the rule keeps working as new varieties are added — no third-party app subscription, no manually maintained collections.
A catalog audit before a single template
We audited SKU patterns across all 1,363 products first, catching the inconsistencies that would otherwise break discounts, filtering and imports.
Update-safe theme work
The store runs on a customized fork of the Empire theme with every change isolated in its own prefixed files, so theme updates don't overwrite the custom build.

Seeds 'n Such now runs on a Shopify storefront organized around the decisions gardeners actually make — what to grow, what they want from it, and where they garden. Shoppers enter through crop, goal or zone and land in relevant collections, while structured product data and metafield connections keep those paths accurate as the catalog changes. The redesigned store launched in September 2026.
